Partnerships that strengthen resilient communities

In each place we work, a local partner has owned, run or extended what we started. We think that is the real test of whether a community becomes more resilient.

The work

Who owns it afterwards

At the global level

UN-Habitat has been a training partner for African sanitation professionals, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) has given us consultative status.

On the ground

In Nepal, Zonta Club Kathmandu took the technology, built it, and handed it to the Pashupati Area Development Trust. In KwaZulu-Natal, our partners include the Gandhi Development Trust, which hosted the 2019 upgrade at the Phoenix Settlement, a donor who funded the 2014 to 2017 school programme, Singakwenza for preschool hand-washing, and the Sivananda World Peace Foundation for local pad manufacturing. We also work with Hippo Roller to help schools and families carry water over long distances. In 2023, talks were reported between the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the local municipality, the Indian Consul General's office in Durban and the Pietermaritzburg Gandhi Foundation on bringing our systems to the region.

What resilient means

What we mean by resilient is practical. Composting toilets that work with no sewer, running water or electricity. Backup water tanks beside school toilets. Biogas kept running through a Kabul winter. Reusable menstrual products that last up to four years. Facilities owned by a municipality or a local trust. Builders and manufacturers who can keep the work going when we are not there.

A local partner owning, running or extending the work is the real test of whether a community becomes more resilient.

Builders and manufacturers who can keep the work going when we are not there.

That is what we mean by resilient โ€” and it is the measure we hold ourselves to.

Who we work with
Two circular pit covers set into a paved floor on either side of a small brick inspection pillar carrying a painted sign
Technology kept free of patents, so partners can use it
