Sanitation in South Africa
Infrastructure and school hygiene education
Through its partnership with Sulabh International (SICAS-SA), TGRF has helped deliver sanitation infrastructure and school-level hygiene education across South Africa. In October 2019, on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, an eco-friendly on-site disposal system was inaugurated at Phoenix Ashram, Durban, upgrading two toilet blocks — attended by Ela Gandhi, Granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, alongside government and consular officials.
The program has directly reached 75 schools across the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with sanitation learning materials and school sanitation clubs extending awareness to a further 1,350 schools across 7 provinces, in coordination with South Africa's Department of Education. The initiative also introduced the country's first "Pay & Use" public convenience, launched in Cape Town.
